Scarlet Macaw
Scientific Name: Ara macao
Similar in coloring to Green-Winged Macaws, Scarlet Macaws are normally smaller in length and weight than their green-winged counterparts. They are generally 33-37 inches long with a weight of 2-2.5lbs. They are also more brightly colored than Green-Winged Macaws, with scarlet to orange-red coloring on their bodies. This fades through yellow to emerald green and turquoise at their wingtips.
Occupying a large range in Central and South America, Scarlet Macaws are found primarily in the tropical rainforests of Mexico, Trinidad, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.
Fun Facts:
- Young Scarlet Macaws have tiny black feathers transversing their faces. These fall out and are replaced by white feathers at maturity.
- Scarlet Macaws generally eat seeds and fruits; they also may consume leaves and bark.
- Since local trees produce fruit at different times throughout the year, young macaws must learn from their parents when each type of fruit is available.
- They will also depend on supplemental feeding from their parents until they are at least three months old.
