Florida Pompano
Scientific Name: Trachinotus carolinus

Florida Pompanos are very striking in appearance. Their scales are a brilliant, reflective silver, and they usually have greenish gray backs and golden throats.

Characterized by deeply flattened bodies and small mouths, Florida pompano can grow up to 24 inches in length and 3-8lbs in weight. They are found primarily in coastal waters-where they are prized by fisherman for their flavorful, mild meat.

  • Florida pompano primarily inhabit coastal waters along sandy beaches, oyster banks and grass beds.
  • They are most commonly seen swimming near sandy coastlines, where they feed on a variety of mollusks.
  • They also hunt for crustaceans and urchins near reefs. One of their favorite prey items is the sand flea.
  • Generally solitary by nature, Florida pompanos are sometimes seen swimming at depths of 130 feet.
