Military Macaw
Scientific Name: Ara militaris

Military Macaws occupy a sizeable-yet fragmented-range from Mexico south to Argentina. Unlike most other species of macaws, Military Macaws can be found in areas of high altitude, and they are not restricted to rainforest habitation. They have also been observed living in arid and semi-arid dry forests, open woodlands and pine-oak forests.

These birds are relatively small macaws, with a mature length of 27-29 inches and weight of 2-2.5lbs. From a distance, Military Macaws appear solid green in color, but closer inspection reveals shades of iridescent olive, emerald, yellow, turquoise and scarlet.

Fun Facts:
  • Military Macaws are listed as a vulnerable species, with a current population of approximately 10,000 to 20,000 and decreasing.
