Green Iguana
Scientific Name: Iguana iguana
Green iguanas are tree-dwelling, tropical lizards. They occupy a sizeable range in Central and South America-from Mexico to Southern Brazil and Paraguay-and they are also common inhabitants of the Caribbean Islands.
Growing the lengths of 4-6.5 feet and weights of 10-15lbs at maturity, Green iguanas have short, muscular legs, and very strong tails. Their heads are adorned with spiny crests, and their claws are sharp and prominent.
Fun Facts:
- Although these lizards look fierce, they are actually primarily herbivores. Vegetation makes up 95% of their diets.
- Green iguanas grow large flaps of skin-called "dewlaps"-under their throats. These dewlaps help regulate their internal temperatures.
- Using their powerful tails to propel them forward, green iguanas often jump long distances from tree to tree.
- They are also capable swimmers, and they are able to hold their breath for up to 30 minutes at a time.
