Marine Mammal Internship Program

Are you a college student or recent graduate interested in pursuing a career in marine mammal training? Then come join us at Gulf World Marine Park for a unique and rewarding internship opportunity.

Our multi-species, training-based program allows you to spend time in  our marine mammal department.  The marine mammal department cares for a variety of  Bottlenose dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, California sea lions, and African black-footed penguins.

In addition to gaining experience in husbandry, animal care and training, you will also sharpen your public speaking skills during guest shows and presentations. You will become an environmental educator and camp counselor during our public programs. Because Gulf World Marine Institute is a Southeast Area Coordinator for the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, you may have the opportunity to assist with our stranding care team. You will learn various aspects of what it takes to care for and train marine mammals in one of the most competitive fields. The marine mammal intership program is a 3 – 4 month unpaid position that requires all participants to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.

Veterinary Internship Program

The Gulf World Marine Park veterinary medical internship is designed for veterinary students, preferably during their senior level or fourth year at an accredited veterinary college. This program offers exposure to a large number of fish, reptiles, birds, and marine mammals including the only collection of Rough-toothed dolphins in the United States. Gulf World Marine Park’s non profit organization Gulf World Marine Institute is also a Southeast Coordinator for the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, so students will participate in the emergency response team during stranding events.

STUDENTS IN CLINICAL ROTATIONS:

Senior students are selected each year to participate in the 4-6 week internship; only one student is on-site at a time.  Internship times are available during January-April and August-November. A maximum of 4 students will be selected each year for the clinical internship. During this time, students are given the opportunity to observe and participate in various clinical activities under the direction of the veterinary staff. Responsibilities are assigned based on each student’s level of interest and aptitude. Students must complete a project, which will be determined in the first week.

STUDENTS THAT ARE 1st AND 2nd YEAR VETERINARY STUDENTS:

Two first or second year veterinary students may be selected for a summer internship. This internship is an 8-10 week program, which will teach the student basic medical training with marine mammals. No senior student will be allowed an internship during the time of the summer internship time slots.

ELIGIBILITY AND HOW TO APPLY

All internships are voluntary, and students are responsible for their own transportation and housing arrangements. Students may apply for a grant to help with cost of living through the University of Florida at http://www.vetmed.ufl.edu/extension/aquatic/education/#Externships. Students must be U.S. citizens in AVMA-accredited veterinary schools.

Third and fourth year students must submit applications for 2013 internship year beginning October 15, 2012 and ending November 15, 2012. First and Second year students interested in the summer 2013 internship must submit applications by March 15, 2013.

All students interested in the Veterinary Medical Externship should send a letter to the address below. This letter should include reasons for wanting to participate in the program and dates of availability. It is recommended that applicants list at least three prioritized availability dates. In addition, students must submit a curriculum vitae, two letters of reference, and proof of U.S. citizenship. All application materials should be forwarded to:

Avian and Small Mammal Internship

Under the supervision of our internship coordinator, you will be given the opportunity to learn about husbandry for birds, dogs, and a variety of other small mammals. You will care for and handle our animals, learn applications of operant conditioning, participate in public presentations for our guests and develop professional relationships.

This department’s small staff and its personal attention to its animals is unique. Because of this interactive environment you will gain hands on experience in exhibit maintenance, proper bird restraint for medical procedures, and assisting in daily shows. We pay close attention to properly representing each of our parrot species which spend their time in our tropical gardens interacting with guests. Our tropical gardens offer an intimate setting in which to give public presentations to guests.

During your stay with us here at Gulf World Marine Park, you will have the opportunity to plan and create your own enrichment project as well as present a research topic and assist in training behaviors. Research related activities include assisting in and personally developing research projects in avian and small mammal enrichment and husbandry. Training will include applying operant conditioning wile assisting in shows and training sessions, maintaining behaviors, and possibly training a new behavior.

This is an unpaid internship program. We require a three month, 40 hour per week commitment. Although housing is not provided, we will do our best to assist you in finding accommodation.

Education Internship Program

Every summer, Gulf World Marine Park offers education internships to interested college students. During this unique, hands-on program, interns participate in experiential learning through both formal and informal environmental education.

As an intern in our Education Department, you will be given the chance to transform our facility’s educational vision into a tangible guest experience for our visitors. You will act as a camp counselor for our Dolphin Day Camps, and Snooze with the Sea Life programs. You will also serve as a park interpreter, participate in public presentations, and work on various special projects that will leave a lasting impression on the park for years to come.
